Adenoids - the augmentation of a pharyngeal (nasopharyngeal) tonsil caused by a hyperplasia of its adenoid tissue. The pharyngeal tonsil settles down in a crest of a nasopharynx and together with tubal, lingual and palatine tonsils is a part of a lymphadenoid pharyngeal ring.

Adenoids are more often observed at children in the age of from 3� till 10 years. Their development is promoted by the diseases causing an inflammation of tonsils and a mucosa of a nasal cavity (a scarlatina, a flu, acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the top respiratory ways, etc).

Distinguish three degrees of augmentation of a pharyngeal tonsil:

I degree - adenoids cover the top part of a vomer;
II degree - adenoids cover top two thirds of vomer;
III degree - adenoids close all or nearly so all vomer.
